The law of the suspected adulteress, the Sotah (Num 5:11–31), is one of the strangest, most perplexing cases in biblical law. Everybody interprets differently. Nobody understands it. Is it the only trial by ordeal in the Bible? Is it magic? What does it show about women's status in the Torah and ancient Israel?

Richard Elliott Friedman is a biblical scholar and the Ann and Jay Davis Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of Georgia. He joined the faculty of the UGA Religion Department in 2006.
