Holocaust: The Word We Love To Hate

How did a Greek – rather than a Hebrew or Yiddish -- word become the name for the Final Solution, particularly a word which depicts Jews as sacrifices? We’ll trace the evolution of this term and examine some of the issues which have been at the heart of the discussion about the Holocaust since 1945: Was it an unprecedented phenomenon or simply an act of anti-Semitism? Was it unique or similar to other genocides? Who are its victims: Jews? Soviet POWs? Polish dissidents? German homosexuals? What do these questions tell us about the society and communities which are debating them?

Deborah E. Lipstadt is Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish and Holocaust Studies at Emory University. Her latest book, The Eichmann Trial, was published in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the trial’s start.
